American University of Sharjah (AUS) was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah. Sheikh Sultan articulated his vision of a distinctive institution against the backdrop of Islamic history and in the context of the aspirations and needs of contemporary society in the UAE and the Gulf region.

With a strong reputation for academic excellence, AUS has come to represent the very best in teaching and research. The university is accredited internationally and recognized by employers the world over for creating graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills and drive to lead in the 21st century.

Conveniently located in University City (12 miles away from Dubai International Airport), Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, AUS is a not-for-profit, independent, coeducational institution of higher education formed on American models but thoroughly grounded in Arab culture. The university hosts approximately 5,600 students from 95 nations and a highly qualified and experienced full-time faculty of more than 365 dedicated individuals.

The university offers 26 bachelor’s degrees, 49 minors, 14 master’s degrees and one doctoral program through the College of Architecture, Art and Design; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Engineering; and School of Business Administration.

AUS is licensed and its programs are accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Affairs Division in the United Arab Emirates. AUS has been accredited in the United States of America by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA, Tel +1 215 662 5606) since June 2004.

The bachelor of science degree programs in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering offered by the College of Engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org/.The bachelor of science degree program in computer science offered by the College of Engineering is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org/. AUS was the first university in the Gulf region and the second outside the United States to receive this accreditation.

The Bachelor of Architecture program offered by the College of Architecture, Art and Design is the first program outside of North America to be accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) in the United States.

The School of Business Administration is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Now in its third decade, AUS is aiming to become a comprehensive, globally recognized center for research and innovation. AUS will focus its new research efforts in areas that will have global reach and impact, as well as contribute to the strategic goals of the UAE as it becomes a globally recognized center for scientific endeavor and innovation. As part of its new research agenda, AUS has established four new research institutes and two new centers:

  • The Biosciences and Bioengineering Research Institute
  • The Material Science and Engineering Research Institute
  • The Gulf Environments Research Institute
  • The Smart Cities Research Institute
  • The High-Performance Computing Center
  • The Geospatial Analysis Center
